Italian NATO Troops Shot And Killed 12 year old Afghan Girl

NATO Forces Killed 12 year old girl In Afghanistan
NATO-led troops shot to dead a 12 year old girl and wounded two other civilians in western Afghanistan Sunday, 3 may 2009, when they opened fire at a vehicle close to a convoy. This girl with her family were driving into Herat from a neighbouring province to attend a wedding party when NATO troops passed from the opposite direction, said Abdul Rauf Ahmadi ( police spokesman for western Afghanistan ).

Ahmad Wali, uncle of this less fortunate girl, and at the time of the incident driving the car, told the reporters that his niece was shot in the face. "It was rainy and we had poor visibility. All of a sudden, I saw sparks in front of our vehicle and then a foreign forces armoured convoy coming from the opposite direction", Wali said.

"After the convoy had passed by, we realised that half of my niece’s face was missing, her mother was wounded in the chest and I had blood on my face caused by broken pieces of windshield", Wali said again.

A spoker person of the Italian soldiers based in the western city of Herat confirmed the shooting but said that they had warned the car to stay away from them before the shooting. "The troops in Herat had signalled to the vehicle several times to stop, then, the forces got worried and fired warning shots into the air and then at the vehicle. We don’t know if anyone was hurt in the vehicle", he said.

Around 70.000 foreign troops under NATO and the U.S. command is in Afghanistan since late 2001. Their duty is to help President Hamid Karzai government troops fighting Taliban and Al Qaeda. And Italy placed around 2.350 soldiers in Afghanistan to be a part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) under NATO command.
